Muscadine Health

Barbara Walters interview on resveratrol  « Incredible Testimonial by Patrick O'Brien

all-natural, enzyme based food supplements.

This 80-page booklet ($9 includes mailing) may be the most valuable read you will ever find. It explains and discusses the health implications of the amazing Muscadine grape, the #1 ingredient (of four) in the Heartland Select health blend.

Muscadines are an American fruit (endemic to the Southeast US, where the heat and humidity are right) and can properly be termed a berry or a grape. [Click HERE to view the North Carolina Muscadine Grape Association.] Unlike table or wine grapes from America, Europe, South America or elsewhere, Muscadines have a more complex biochemistry.

The term “phyto-chemical” describes the almost infinite variety of natural compounds that exist in nature. The plant kingdom is so vast and varied that thousands or even millions of potentially important phytochemicals remain in hiding. Cures for many diseases—including problems associated with aging—lie undiscovered somewhere in the world’s forests, oceans and hedgerows.

Heartland Select gives consumers access to the exciting buffet of phytochemicals that are found in Muscadines and two other grape species that make up the Heartland Select blend.

Phytochemical-rich pomace, made from the seeds and skins of grapes, is ingredient number four. The blend of three natural fruits and muscadine pomace has resulted in a superior phytochemical drink, Heartland Select. Heartland’s margin of antioxidant superiority over Acai, Mangosteen, Noni and Goji blends is dramatic.

Phytochemical drinks are pricey, so why use a 50% to 75% less potent product when Heartland Select is roughly the same cost per bottle and so much more potent? The ORAC per serving is right on the label of every bottle (see graphic)!

Common standards of comparison: ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity, a system for comparing the antioxidant value of foods. ORAC was developed by the National Institute on Aging, a department of the National Institutes of Health. For most Americans, an extra daily ORAC intake of 3764 would more than double the fresh fruit and vegetable intake quotient of their normal routine.

The FRAP assay measures the antioxidant potential of biological fluids and represents yet another option for analysis. TEAC, the Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity assay, evaluates antioxidant strength using vitamin E as a standard. In other words, all three systems are measuring antioxidant potency, but in different ways.

This powerful book presents 397 biomedical references at the end.

Most people will not read Muscadine Health from start to finish in one sitting. It is well written and easy to enjoy, but its scope is vast. Readers find themselves thinking in depth about each section and not wanting to move ahead too fast.

As an American, I felt a sense of national pride when I went to the Web to read some Muscadine history. Many Native Americans used this fruit for food and both the Cherokee and Creek nations used them in medicinal ways. The European explorers and settlers were similarly impressed…

"Grapes of such greatness, yet wild, as France, Spain, nor Italy hath no greater”

…wrote the governor of North Carolina in 1585 in a letter to Sir Walter Raleigh..

The white or bronze variety of muscadine are called Scuppernongs, and here is how their nutritional value is described in traditional terms: Scuppernongs and Muscadines are high in Vitamin C and contain potassium, Vitamin B, and trace minerals; they are naturally low in sodium and free of fat and cholesterol. When measuring, 2 cups of scuppernongs equals 3/4 pound.

Southern good ol’ boys have been eating scuppernongs and muscadines—and drinking wine made from the berries—since before the Revolutionary War, but the more sophisticated qualities of this food were unknown until the last ten years. The authors of Muscadine Health, who also work as consultants to Heartland, are the world’s leading experts in this bonanza of Twenty-first Century science.

A preview on Metabolic Syndrome, one of the most important concepts discussed in this book:

“Persons with metabolic syndrome have a marked risk of developing overt diabetes, heart disease, atherosclerosis and stroke. Metabolic syndrome is in epidemic proportions in all populations that are wealthy enough to eat a modern calorific diet while maintaining relatively sedentary work and life styles. Europeans have decided to find a solution with the LIPGENE research project (references given). The goal is to develop a strategy to alter dietary patterns to prevent metabolic syndrome. European estimates suggest that 10-20% of current middle-aged and elderly men and 10-25% of middle-aged to elderly women have metabolic syndrome. US statistics are much higher, perhaps twice this rate. Fortunately, this epidemic is a reversible tragedy in our opinion.”

Metabolic syndrome is defined by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP). These definitions are very similar and they will identify many of the same individuals as having this condition. IDF excludes any subject without increased waist circumference, while the NCEP definition allows diagnosis based on other criteria. The IDF uses geography-specific cut points for waist circumference, while NCEP uses only one set of waist circumference cut points regardless of geography. Otherwise, these two definitions are very close.

Nutrition Call – by Certified Clinical Nutritionist Jen Ferniza

interview was by EcoQuest Master Manager Michele Jones

notes were complied by Ev Nelson and Pat Ferguison

Topic: the Heartland Select product, muscadine juice (nutraceutical beverage).

We are hearing of many benefits including sounder sleep, mental brightness, and regularity.

EcoQuest was introduced to the muscadine grape concept in 2007. Jen and other EQ representatives visited the muscadine vineyards with Dr. Diane Hartle as their guest and the potential of creating a muscadine product was discussed. To achieve product superiority they decided to add grape pomace back into the juice.

This product is different from other muscadine products based on four significant ingredients. It is not "just juice"; therefore it is more effective than muscadine alone. Table juice is not the same as our nutraceutical quality Heartland Select.

Pomace is what is left after the juice is all squeezed out of the grapes. It’s this pomace of skins and seeds that contains a lot more antioxidants, including the highest resveratrol amounts. The pomace is dried and made into a pharmaceutal quality powder. It is a highly concentrated source of antioxidants.

The quality of antioxidants also depends on the way the juice is processed. The Heartland Select juice is made just as the grapes are harvested in the fall to get the freshest juice. Most juices use a cold process which most think would be best. Jen says that Heartland uses heat for extraction of the juice which actually increases the levels of antioxidants. The heat enhances the antioxidants with a small amount of a beneficial yeast. This is also true of tomatoes. When they are processed with heat, higher levels of licopenes result.

After processing, the bottles of juice are kept in cold storage at the vineyard for shipment from that location.

What makes the grape so special?

It is grown in a sandy clay soil and has a high tolerance for heat and lack of rain. It has an extra pair of chromosomes (20 pair compared to 19 in Concord and European varieties) giving muscadines more genetic resource material and thus more nutrients and more antioxidants.

Muscadines are only found in the Southeast US and only a few vineyards actually grow them right. Heartland Select chose a family-run vineyard that has been a muscadine agriculture leader for generations. This vineyard grows their grapes differently. The soil is cared for and will be certified as organic in the future. Pesticides are not used. The family has always done things this way for a low impact on the environment. Jen and Diane tasted grapes from several vineyards and this one had the best taste of those sampled.

The superiority of this product is shown in many charts in the Muscadine Health book, which is based on Dr. Hartle’s studies and research.

Polyphenols have proven to be a great benefit for prostate health. They also work to balance blood sugars. Major research is underway regarding the effect on blood sugar levels. Heartland Select actually becomes a super food able to help fight and work to prevent many diseases, and these benefits are explained very well in the book.

There is no CAeDS in this product because CAeDS cannot be used in a liquid. There still is great absorption because of the processing methods used.

Jen recommends using Infinity2’s Essentials For Life because our diets need the enzymes, flora, and the other nutrients in the formula. What about Infinity2’s Life Force Super Antioxidant formula? This exceptional product has antioxidants that are not found in grapes. Organic Olive extract, beta-carotenes, and lutein are some of the additional antioxidant sources in Infinity2’s Life Force Super Antioxidant product.

Heartland Select juice is concentrated and packed with as much as possible, which bumps us up to prevention levels.

Using the USDA recommended daily food intake we would get 3000 – 5000 ORAC units

(USDA research link on ORAC: http://www.ars.usda.gov/is/AR/archive/feb99/aging0299.htm)

For disease prevention levels should be 7,000 ORAC units

By eating recommended amounts of fruits and vegetables daily, we get 700 ORAC units per serving.

As stated in a circle on the label, the muscadine juice from Heartland Select contains 3764 ORAC units per serving. There are no sugars and no fillers.

Other products often state the ORAC units of the fruit that is used or amount per liter or per milliliter. Heartland Select contains 63,000 ORAC units per liter.

Consumers want to see what they get when using products per the recommended serving. Dry foods measure ORAC score in grams.

Jen says, "So bump yourself back up by eating 4-5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day. You will get lutein and selenium, which have horrible ORAC scores, but we need these phytonutrients. Eat the rainbow of colors with fresh foods (yellow, orange, red, purple, green). Phytonutrients help "phyte" disease.

Cost of the muscadine juice is $139 for case of 4 bottles (plus shipping), which is about $35 ($39) per bottle. With the 4 bottles, use 3 for your monthly supply and share the 4th with others. Recommended dose is 1 oz in the morning and 1 oz in the evening but it is perfectly effective if 2 ozs are used as one serving. It can be diluted or it can be added to a TED (the Enzyme Diet) shake. Scroll down for a remarkable testimonial by a 70-year old customer. Earn a case free during promotional period. http://www.ecoquestintl.com/email/090213_Heartland_1.html

Jen’s 4-year-old daughter asks for her "orange juice with a splash of her grape juice."  Jen, being pregnant (has since had a healthy girl), knows how important the mother’s diet and level of nutrition is and that it impacts the baby’s future health and genetic code. She advocates Infinity2 nutritional supplements along with Heartland Select.

Heartland Select muscadine juice is safe for diabetics. It contains natural occurring sugar as well as other ingredients helpful to "phyte" complications of diabetes. Glycation measures how much sugar gets stuck to proteins (red blood cells) that cause problems for a diabetic with their feet and eyes. Preliminary research shows phytochemicals slow this down.  We want things free flowing. This also slows the process of thrombosis.

Fact Sheets will be forthcoming to provide basic education and a good understanding of the benefits of this product. It’s important to bring science down to a level that makes sense to people. Muscadine Health books are an invaluable source of information to share NOW.

Add Muscadine juice for its bio-chemical “oomph”! According to Jen, that’s what her bio-chemistry professor would say to explain the energizing benefits of good nutrition.

In the book when showing comparisons to other grape juices the actual product names are not used. People will know what company and products they are anyway. For example, any gogi juice will have the same results as the juice product advertised under that name. The same name grape, acai, mangosteeen will be clear as to the company representing the juice. The Muscadine tastes better and contains 2˝ higher antioxidant levels.

Serve it chilled – no ice.

Testimonial Letter

Dear Bob,

I am writing about your comment (on a training call) that you wished you could just drink a lot of Heartland Select.

Frankly, I crave Heartland Select and have a hard time not opening the fridge for another drink. One day I really was craving it. It seemed too expensive to just drink it up. But I reasoned that one time we spent $40 each on a dinner, so why couldn't I have a bottle in a short time? It should be better for me than the dinner...

All day I stopped by the fridge for another sip. In 2 days the bottle was empty.  The third day was awesome for me. I could think!! That 3rd day I was able to clean off my desk (piles 6 inches high), put everything where it went, remember where I put it (important, right?), and I had energy left over. I felt rejuvenated! I realized that I really won't lose my mind, which has been a great fear.

Today, several weeks later, I still remember what new files I created and where I filed the other papers. For some that is not a big deal, but I have had a foggy brain for a long time—since the early nineties. (In fact, that was the only symptom I had in 1995 when my Doctor found cancer.) The foggy effect is so apparent that what I say becomes a laughing matter due to the words that come out of my mouth. Sometimes people help me with the next wordusually I am making a gesture that tells them I am looking for a word.

Before I go further, I must give God the glory for all things in my life and not leave out that I believe in His blessings for me.

Thursday JoAnn Wilhoite hosted the training call for Maddie Dodson. She discussed the ill effects of an overload of candidia albicansotherwise known as yeast overgrowth. It was then that I realized what was causing at least a major portion of my not being able to think clearly. Bob, lots of people say they forget, so I want to clarify my lack of ability to converse with someone.  Besides being forgetful, during conversation ... nouns do not come to me. Plus, I just was not getting my housework doneand there are only two of us. Thankfully, my husband ate what I put on the table because sometimes it was a collection of food rather than a meal.

Back to the Heartland Select... I now realize that our functional drink has a great positive effect against yeast overgrowth. Knowing that yeast overgrowth can be a precursor to diseases with a name, I am in favor of keeping the yeast growth down to about nil!

As to the cost of the Heartland Select, I thought to myself: Drink up and sell another air purifier!!

Thank you for the morning nutrition calls. They've been more interesting lately now that you added more speakers. We get so many more perspectives. More people should listen because they are really great.

Heartland Select

December 2nd, 2007, I had two serious strokes. In 2008, I went through a number of TIAs (mini strokes). Through the previous years, I had lost the feeling in my hands and feet due to diabetic neuropathy. I had daily leg cramps in my calves, and my blood pressure and blood sugars were totally out of control. My wife and I knew many of the EMS personnel by name because they took me to the hospital so many times. I could hardly stand due to the instability; and when I did attempt to get up from bed or my chair, I would pass out and fall without a clue. I spent nearly two months in and out of hospitals and was taking over 15 daily medications.

I was introduced to Heartland Select in October 2008. After taking 2 ounces a day for just 2 weeks, I began walking again, the dizziness went away, and the pain in my legs eased along with the pain in rest of my body. I, of course, ordered a case of the "miracle juice."

Before it arrived, I was without it for five days. In that time, all my symptoms came back. Within two days of taking the Heartland product again, I felt like a new man.

I have stopped taking my blood pressure medications and all my blood sugar readings are normal. Thank you Heartland Select for giving my life back.

I am now on Autoship for Heartland Select!

Pharmacokinetics

The most efficient way of administering resveratrol in humans appears to be buccal delivery, that is without swallowing, by direct absorption through the inside of the mouth.

To get the absolute most out of your Heartland Select, put your whole serving in your mouth and hold it there for one minute. The author of this website tested this system and now believes in it with enthusiasm. "This 'method' of ingesting a liquid is very different from what we are used to, but with practice it becomes a real pleasure. The flavor of Heartland Select stays with you for the full minute (or longer if you wish) and then you can start the 'micro-swallowing' process after you have counted down your minute. Obviously, you can swallow it down at any time if the phone rings or you have to talk. By using 'buccal delivery' you get the oral absorption and good taste sensations...and yet you still end up with the product in your stomach. A good time to do this with 1 ounce might be during a morning nutrition call (unless you're the speaker). Maybe we can get 50 people to do this at once during a moment of silence on one of our calls. Think about it. We can open the line and all hum Jingle Bells and see who laughs first. Look at the paragraph that follows. Resveratrol is only one of 20 or more beneficial phytochemicals in Heartland Select, but this report suggests that the absorption rate may be 5 times as high when buccal delivery is practiced. That's incredibly significant and should not be ignored. Maybe a person who uses 1 ounce of Heartland Select in this manner will get better results than a person who uses 2 ounces through oral swallowing. I have no data to inform us about the absorption of the other ingredients. I'm going to stick with 2 ounces, but I'm going to change to this system."

The opening paragraph of this information block and the description that follows come from Wikipedia:

When one mg of resveratrol in 50 mL solution was retained in the mouth for one min before swallowing, 37 ng/ml of free resveratrol were measured in plasma two minutes later. This level of unchanged resveratrol in blood can only be achieved with 250 mg of resveratrol taken in a pill form.
