Update on FEMA Reimbursements

for Hurricane Victims.

Doug Hoffman called FEMA (1-800-621-3362) to see what they would say. Here are two pieces of information that seem pretty reliable:

1)  Doug was told that if, during the telephone interviewing process, he told her that he bought an air purifier to help with the clean-up and included it in the "disaster related damages" section of the report, he WOULD be reimbursed; but she could not say how much would be paid. She suggested they include their receipt of purchase to document the amount. (We suspect there would be some limit on that amount just like there would be on a generator, chainsaw, or any other such purchase -- they wouldn't want someone to buy the best of the best and expect to be totally reimbursed!)

2)  Doug then received a packet from FEMA.
In the packet from FEMA...

 "Help After a Disaster".

On Page 5 under the section "Types of Eligible Losses",

subtitle "Other than Housing Needs" is the following paragraph:

"Money to repair damaged personal property or to pay for disaster-related necessary expenses and serious needs is limited to items or services that help prevent or overcome a disaster-related hardship, injury, or adverse condition. They will not pay to return or replace your personal property to its condition before the disaster. You may use your money provided for 'other than housing needs' to repair or pay for:

¢ Disaster-related medical and dental costs.
¢ Disaster-related funeral and burial cost.
¢ Clothing; household items (room furnishings, appliances); tools (specialized or protective clothing and equipment) required for your job; necessary educational materials (computers, school books, supplies).
¢ Fuels for primary heat source (heating oil, gas, firewood)
¢ Clean-up items (wet/dry vacuum, air purifier, dehumidifier)
    ¢ Disaster damaged vehicle
¢ Moving and storage expenses related to the disaster (moving and storing property to avoid additional disaster damage while disaster-related repairs are being made to the home).
¢ Other necessary expenses or serious needs as determined by FEMA.
