Product Concepts and Specifics

Module A1 - The Concept of Indoor Air Pollution and the Need for Air Purification.

Some homes smell like mold. We call that a musty smell. In extreme cases, mold can make homes unlivable and require demolition. Some types of mold can be lethal. So why take a chance that mold will grow in your property? Homeowners, landlords, school system administrators, and real estate agents need to understand that a scientifically-validated way to control mold is not only available, but very affordable.

We have all been in a room, home, or vehicle that is clean and fresh smelling.

We've also been in rooms/homes/schools/vehicles that smell terrible.

Which do you prefer?

Some homes smell like cats, dogs, or other animals. This kind of environment can be dramatically improved in a matter of hours.

Some homes smell like cigarette or cigar smoke. In the worst cases, they smell like dirty ash trays. Air purification can make a difference overnight.

Some homes smell like people, old tennis shoes, piles of laundry, and sweaty athletic gear. In certain cases, when a bed-ridden person is present, a home can literally smell like death. Indoor environments do not have to be this way.

Nursing home rooms can smell like urine and worse. An air purifier can solve that permanently.

Why is Canada different? Experts have debated the pros and cons of ozone for decades. Here's the basic indoor air quality story as told in the Alpine Industries days.

Eighty percent of dust in a home is made up of human skin. Pet dander can also be a big source of pollution if you have pets. What does this show? It shows that selling can be very profitable. And a lot of people can be helped.

It also shows that through networking you can make far bigger profits and help far more people.

Had Conroe built 11 strong legs during the same years that he made 5,000+ retail sales, his business might have reached Level 20—the absolute top—in the Vollara Comp Plan.

Several years ago the creator of Chippynews.com tried to get the company to pay more attention to "little distributors" like me. His point was that I stayed active year after year; whereas some "apparent high achievers" turned out to be flash-in-the-pan types. They did a lot quickly and then were gone. They got recognition and awards but as the years went by, people like me actually generated far more total business. Bob wanted to call us "Turtles" (as in The Hare and the Tortoise) and find a way to get us more recognition. 

Now wait until you hear what has happened to this Turtle... 

When I lived in Charleston 15 years ago, I made a retail air purifier sale (an Alpine unit) to a doctor in my church. 

Two years ago I visited Charleston and went to that church. There was my anesthesiologist friend, Dr. MacDonald. He remembered me. This time he signed up to be a distributor and bought a modern air purifier at wholesale. We were EcoQuest at the time, not yet Vollara.

Dr. MacDonald is very health conscious, but he was sold on Amway so I couldn't get him to use our supplements. Nor could I get him interested in the opportunity because Amway left a bad taste in his mouth.

Becoming More Qualified...

Science is science and testimonials are stories. When I hear a testimonial I carefully consider its content and source. Then I decide if I believe it 20% or 50% or even 100%.

There is nothing inherently wrong with testimonials. Scientists use accidents in their labs and examples from life all the time. The story goes that Isaac Newton began to understand gravity after seeing an apple fall from a tree. The microwave oven was "discovered" when a candy bar melted in a scientist's pocket as he worked on a project that had nothing to do with heat.

So we encourage you to use and learn from testimonial stories. Just be careful not to try practicing medicine or curing your friends.

Our air technologies are not good for asthma. They are good for cleaning the environment. Some people with asthma love our products. Others say, "No. Get it out of here. I hate it."

In neither case are we treating or attempting to treat asthma. We are adding ions to their air. We are removing particulate. We are oxidizing away organic pollutants. We are killing mold, bacteria and viruses. If any of those changes make an asthmatic person feel more comfortable, that's great. But one person's experience (no matter how interesting)does not prove that someone else will have the same experience.

Where Doctors Stand

"You can get all the nutrients you need from your food." Doctors often give this advice. Is it true?

I hate to start Module 8 this way because I am a big fan of doctors. I do not believe—as many nutrition salespeople say—that doctors want people to stay sick. That assertion is ridiculous and insulting. Most doctors are intelligent men or women who invested many years in training and now work long hours to help patients. Is their advice always right? No; but neither is mine. Doctors mostly do good and helpful work.

Why do some doctors say you can get all the nutrients you need from food? The answer is simple. It's a stock answer. The doc who says that may have just treated you for a problem that, from his point of view, wasn't diet related. He knows little or nothing about your eating habits and, frankly, is too busy to think about it. If asked, most modern doctors say that a good multivitamin is okay. If you show them your brand (any brand) they will probably say they have no problem with that. Mainly, they want to move on to their next patient.

If you went to a certified nutritionist or dietician you would get a more erudite answer. But even there you would not get a consensus. One nutritionist has a certain bias that he or she fervently believes in. Another nutritionist feels just as strongly about another point of view. They may agree in broad terms, but not when it comes down to the specifics of what is best.

That's my take on where doctors and nutrition professionals stand. If I get sick, I will definitely go to a doctor. If I'm involved in an accident, I want to be taken to a doctor. And I'll probably trust and follow the advice I'm given. If I have doubts, it's my option to consider a second opinion. Ultimately, my health is my responsibility, not my doctor's.

When it comes to staying healthy—where good nutrition plays such a significant role, I'm going to rely mostly on sources other than doctors. I'm going to rely on my own opinions, good old common sense, and a certain amount of trial and error. Professional input is good, too. I'm going to read some books and perhaps listen to some lectures. The Web is a vast resource that has both good and bad content. In the end, each of us will make our own call.

I implore you: Be open to new and better ideas, but think for yourself.

The History of Supplementation

Hundreds of years ago seafaring men knew that onions or lemons could prevent the loss of teeth and other symptoms they suffered from spending months at sea eating restricted diets. The disease they suffered from was scurvy, a vitamin C deficiency. British sailors came to be called limeys because they took citrus fruits on their voyages.

Americans accepted the idea of supplementation early in the Twentieth Century. Relying first on public health statistics and then on recommendations from the scientific community, we allowed certain nutritional supplements to be added to food. Vitamin D was added to milk. Iodine, to salt. B vitamins were added to products made with processed flour.

Doctors also bought into the idea of supplements. Pregnant women were told to take iron and folic acid. Babies were given fortified formulas and many young children took cod liver oil. Old people were told to take one-a-day type vitamins. Athletes who were looking for peak performance were told to take supplements.

That's where you and I come in. I'm not an athlete, and you're probably not either; but we want peak health (at Vollara we call that uncompromising health). We want to live long, active, alert lives. If scientists and doctors think nutritional supplements are good for athletes, count me in. I want my life to be a super marathon, not a mid-range race.

Learning About Vollara

This training module was written by Bob Giddens, a Vollara distributor. The comments and opinions are my own, of course, but they reflect the feelings of many Vollara people. I have always been blessed with good health. In my family there is no significant heart disease, diabetes, or cancer history. Consequently, I have never looked to nutrition to cure anything, but rather to maintain the good health I already have. Indeed, it is improper to promote nutritional supplements as cures, as replacements for medicines, or as preventatives (notwithstanding the scientific validity of preventing scurvy by eating lemons).

I think of supplements as food...as much a part of my diet as the meats, vegetables, dairy products and fruits I eat. I like being healthy and want to stay that way. At 68, I am active, alert and happy. I try to eat a reasonably balanced diet, but I also have some bad dietary habits (for example, I like Dr Pepper and fried chicken). To maintain my dietary intake to the highest level possible, I take handfuls of Vollara supplements. In 1970 (40 years ago) I began marketing nutrition products. It was not Vollara.

I'm a big user of nutritional supplements. There was a time when I took almost every product in the line. I have good healthy elimination and never needed Re:Cleanse, but I used most of them.

Also, I have a mini-office display in my home. It's built into the hallway wall between the foyer and the office where I am working right now.

I'm not trying to hurry you, but I urge you to eventually buy every product in this module. You can use most of them as supplements. When you do, keep the empty bottle for your display. There will be times when someone will ask about an ingredient and you'll want to see the label.

Keep the unused container on the shelf if you buy a product you don't want to use. Little by little you'll have one of everything.

Module A10 - Vollara Nutritional Products Testimonials.

Thank you for allowing me this honor and privilege to share my story. Many of you asked me to send my speech about how Vollara products have benefited my family, so I have typed it. Feel free to pass it along to others. I have added an update paragraph and a new photo to bring you to the beginning of 2010.

If you ever saw the movie Eight is Enough, then you have a very vivid picture of my family. I wondered if they secretly videoed my family so they could make the movie! I always knew what the next scene was going to be. When I left the theatre, I was so tiredit reminded me of WORK and my LIFE!

I personally gave birth to 8 wonderful children. My oldest son Joe is 29, married with 4 girls. One daughter is 27 and single. At home we have 4 boys and 2 girls 17, 14, 11, 9, 6, and 3. When I joined this company I knew I would have to work around home schooling and birthing babies, mostly part-time. That was "B.E."- before Emily!

After eight and a half months of pre-labor pains, hospital stays, and bed rest on my left side drinking gallons of water, Emily was born weighing 5 pounds. We were informed that she had Down Syndrome and would need open-heart surgery in the coming months. Life suddenly went into "A.E." after Emily.

My new life-changing challenge was to "KEEP HER ALIVE." My goals and mission were to proceed with determination, drive, denial of self, and decisive measure to ensure that she was "kept alive."

Her schedule consisted of 2 months or around-the-clock feedings every 3 hours and then 2 months of every 2 hours around-the-clock feedings. These required collecting breast milk, fortifying it for added calories, and putting it in a 2-ounce container to feed her through her N-G tube (feeding tube in the nose). Along with this, medications were given at different intervals during the day. After 4 months of virtually no sleep, numerous trips to the hospital and doctors, exhaustion took on a whole new definition. Still, there was only one option: "KEEP HER ALIVE"! My strength to physically do what had to be done, came ONLY from the Power of God. By this time, my physical ability to carry on was exhausted! God does and will do the impossible.

Still 6 pounds at 4 months, she was admitted to Eggleston's Children's Hospital in Atlanta for Open Heart Surgery. Instead of an expected 2-weeks' stay, it turned into a 4-month stay. Besides open heart, she also had a G-Tube and Fundo-placation surgery, 2 blood transfusions, and a heart cath.

While in the hospital I received a gift that would change my life and, later, Emily's health. Cadle & Alicia McEachin sent me Essentials for Life and a Fresh Air Buddy (personal air purifier). These products played a part in my health. The Buddy was a Godsend for Emily. It literally kept her from constant congestion and drainage.

Before receiving these gifts, I had pretty much determined that I could not continue as a networker. These "gifts of life" changed that. Somehow, someway, someday, I wanted to repay them. Money wasn’t an option, but working the business could be.

I decided to keep my distributorship alive!

It would be two and a half years before I could even begin to fulfill my desire to say "thanks." Those years were either spent in multiple doctors' offices, the ER, or hospitals at least every week up until the end of 2006. From October to January 2007, Emily was doing better. Cadle called and asked if I would join him in working a recruiting project. I agreed to give it a try.

In December, my sister gave me some information about how nutrition and enzymes could help children with Downs. Well, I knew where to get Enzyme Nutritionals!! January 2nd I began an intense regime of our Infinity2 products with Emily. These included:

Re:Store did not mix well with anything so I hid tiny drops on a spoon with her solid food. Now, she likes me to squirt it right in her mouth! Crazy I know! She seems to like the extreme taste.

The FIRST day her stomach issues ceased! The first day! The first day! The first day!

No more arching her back from pain. No more screaming with cramps

No more gas pains. No more sleepless nights - most important for mom!

January 10th - Her occupational therapist was amazed at her progress just from the week before. He said, "It was as if a light came on in her head." For the first time, she was exploring toys in detail, focusing on how everything worked. Her speech therapist noted on January 11th that she was more alert, attentive, and interactive. Her attention span had increased in just one week. She began saying words with ease. In two weeks time, her vocabulary was in the 30's and also signs.

January 12th - She stood up and took one step! We noticed that her baby fat wasn't as apparent. Just feeling her arms and legs, you could tell she was developing muscle tone. The muscle tone in her legs began to increase.

January 27th - She had a toy with handles that she stood up on and begannot walkingbut running up and down the hallway. Talk about a happy family, we were all over her with excitement. Just two weeks ago, her legs were still very "loose noodle." Now she’s on her own!

Six weeks after starting the vitamins she started cruising, standing on her own, and now she’s running! She also likes to drive. She has a child’s coupe car that she loves to get in and ride through the house, saying "Bye-Bye" as she closes the door with her purse on her arm!!

It’s been nine months now, NO hospital, ER, or Doctors office visits!!!!!!

Emily is G-Tube free, feeding herself with spoons and forks on a regular diet and basically ordering her older brothers and sisters around! She even whistles and signs for her dog, Toby. Her vocabulary is increasing daily along with signing.

The lessons I learned from raising Emily can be applied to business. My advice to you would be to "KEEP IT ALIVE"—your business, of course. Treat it as if it were your flesh and blood—a gift from God. You will have some hard days. As one of Emily’s CICU nurses told me, "It's not a Bad Day, just a Hard Day." There will be days with long hours, days where you want that afternoon nap, or go to bed early. Taking it easy is not always an option if you want to KEEP IT ALIVE.

Is it worth it, you may ask? Emphatically, YES! Were those years of keeping Emily alive worth it? Absolutely! If I could visualize for you all the joy, the smiles, and the laughter she has brought to our family and really anyone who meets her, you would understand. Her first day in the learning center, she walked in or rather "ran in" when she spotted the kids and toysnot even looking back to tell me bye. She had a mission, a goal, a love of playing.

A 2010 update: Emily is now 5 (Christmas photo above) and still doing great. She doesn't speak in sentences, but she understands everything and is a happy child. She has speech and occupational therapies in a pre-kindergarten school and is doing well socially. Very outgoing! If I skip her supplements on a busy day or if I'm at work and no one in the family gets them for her, we see changes in her comfort level and digestion. She takes Re:Fuel, Re:Balance, Re:Build, Re:Absorb, and Re:Place. We try not to give her milk, preferring juice or water. We use ionized, alkaline water but as of now we don't have our machine and have to get water from a friend. We believe in the water and would love to own a Living Water unit.

Jan 26, 2007—We just returned from a visit with Les's heart doctor. His weight was 179 today compared to 194 a year ago. The doctor asked if he was still taking an aspirin a day and he said, "NO." He handed the doctor the InfiAid Fact Sheet and an empty bottle. Les explained that Re:Flex (formerly called InfiAid) was an anti-inflammatory and shouldn't be taken with aspirin so he cut out the aspirin.

I had a heart attack on February 26, 2005. I was coming home from working a booth at the Garden Show. From that incident, I learned I was possibly diabetic, or pre-diabetic. I decide to start the early version of Vollara's Shape Your Weight diet in March. My motivation was more for health than weight-loss.

I have bad eating habits—a cup of coffee in the morning and maybe food around 2:30 PM.

To achieve weight loss, your calorie intake should be 1200 calories. By doing the calorie count, I found I was only getting 600 to 800 and my body was under-nourished. I have taken Re:Fuel (formerly Essentials for Life) since they were first introduced, probably the only good nutrition I was getting.

What a no-brainer this program is! Just a vanilla shake with 2% milk twice a day. I only had to remember the veggies and fruits between the shakes (half an apple), sensible meal (more chicken-fish than beef) and take the Re:Lease (formerly Lipo-Chromizyme).

Since March, I have gone from 151 to 130...mostly from my gut/midsection. I went from a 12 to an 8 dress size. My 3 lipid blood results tell the rest of the story. Both the cardiologist and the endocrinologist called with the results. The scary changes they had been discussing were not necessary. Both said, "Keep doing what you're doing!"

Keep in mind, my AIC went down from 7.7 to 7.2 and the good range is between 4.3 and  6.1. That means I have to watch my diet. Re:Place helps with that. If you decide to do the program, the blood work is more important the dress size! As Jim Rohn says, "Take good care of your body, it's the only place you have to live."

Also, our company's nutrition calls are wonderful. They have worked for me.

Interesting thing I want to share: I invited 15 people in my home to talk about nutrition. Since I have a blood-sugar tester, I tested anyone who was interested. A lot of people don't even know they are at risk.

Becoming More Qualified...

Understand what testimonials are and what they are not.

Generally speaking, testimonials are stories from everyday people, told about themselves or a family member.

We try to screen out the stories that seem overly exaggerated... and we ask the people who send testimonials to cover as many basic facts as they can...so the reader can draw his own conclusions and not rely 100% on someone else's conclusions.

Even careful testimonials are not science. One person's "results" do not mean that someone else will have the same results.

A lot of scientific ideas begin with accidents or testimonials. According to legend, Isaac Newton developed insight into his studies of gravity by watching an apple fall. So ideas acquired anecdotally are not necessarily bad. The principle behind the microwave was discovered when a candy bar in a scientist's pocket melted as he was working on something entirely different.

Esther McClendon's heartwarming story about Emily does not prove that every Down Syndrone child will be helped...but it sure seems like an idea worth testing.

We don't want testimonial readers to reject professional medical advice based on hearing that a certain nutrition idea might work. That word "might" is mighty important. If a guy says his ache went away after taking a certain product, you have no way of knowing if his ache was about to go away in any case.

Human health is not a simple thing. All people are different. Doctors aren't perfect either, but they are trained to take our differences into consideration.

The best testimonials are those you witness personally. They're still not science. They are just testimonies, but at least you have personal knowledge of the conditions and circumstances.

First hand testimonials can be worth millions of dollars because of the empowerment they provide. A person who has seen what he or she feels is a miracle becomes, in some cases, an unstoppable business builder.

It's his belief level that is unstoppable.

The more you expose your products, the more likely you are to come across miracles. I remember meeting a mother and father in Allentown, PA. Their daughter had been born with a problem in her breathing passage. For 5 years the baby had to live with a tracheotomy. The surgeon couldn't fix her air passage until the infection went away. Then the family bought an air purifier to clean their air of dog smells. A few days later the girls infection level was down and for the first time in her life she was able to breathe and talk normally. The doctor speculated that the air purifier killed a fungus or bacteria that had been holding the girl back for years.

Okay, here's my point. Can you imagine how empowered that mother and father were? I only met them once, and I'm emotionally impressed 12 years later.

Yes, testimonials are good. They have their place. They can change people's lives. That's why we use them.

But be careful not to misuse testimonials. Don't let yourself get carried away.

Everything you do is an example...because everyone around you is always watching. Even when they are not consciously watching, still they are aware—amazingly aware—of what you say, what you do, what attitudes you project, and how you respond to situations. Your example can be good, bad, or neutral. You get to decide.

Let's consider a house painter. One job might bid out at $5,000. If things go right, he can net $1,500 in a week. Five long days of work. Then he is out of business until he sells another job. This type of businessman has to do good work; that goes without saying. But to get the best referrals, he should also be polite, neat, and punctual. If he sees something extra that has to be done—a small repair—he should do it. Ideally, the customer will tell his friends. "This guy was fantastic. He did a great job, finished on time, didn't damage my plants, and fixed a problem under my eaves."

In Vollara, we have a much bigger audience. A Vollara leader who says and does the right things will impress 50 people or even 500, not just one client at a time. And you get to decide. From the very beginning, you create your personal story. You shape your own image.

What starter pack did you choose? Did you jump in with confidence? Did you stretch a little—take a little risk—in order to be off to the strongest possible start?

The Bob Giddens startup story:

"In 1995 I started with 11 air purifiers and some literature. The bill came to $4,600, half of which was borrowed from a friend. The company offered 6 air units in a Success Pack for $2,500. I got that plus 5 more units. My plan was to use 1 in my own home and 10 for marketing. On Day 1, I called my 8 best prospects. Six of 8 said they were not interested, but I eventually (within 9 months) recruited 5 of those 8. I set my first recruiting appointment for 9:00 AM the following morning and sponsored my first distributor. While flying home to Florida, I wrote a 1-page prospecting letter. I made my first retail sales presentation that evening. And I started pulling together names and addresses of everyone I knew. On midnight of the second day I mailed 200 copies of the prospecting letter: 192 new prospects and the 8 I had already called. My education was in engineering so I'm kind of a numbers person. 24 of the 192 showed an interest and within 3 months I had sponsored 12 from that mailing. I sponsored 2 more people very quickly and drove to another town to sponsor James Clendenin on day 7. I already had preliminary goals, which were: [1] To contact never fewer than 5 new prospects every day, without fail, for 100 days. [2] To identify at least 1 'leader type person' per week. [3] To have 20 working legs within 1 year. [4] to immediately start working on a more comprehensive goal plan. And, [5] to quickly build my organization large enough that I could do 4 meetings per week for 2 years.

"Here are some benchmarks. After just 3 months I could list 43 leaders or 'possible leaders' in my small but growing group. Just before the end of my fifth month I received a $12,400 bonus check. It was not the biggest check I had ever earned, but it was the most wonderful check I had ever received. In March 1996 I received a $53,000 bonus check, the largest check anyone in the company had ever earned to that point. In November 1996 I finished paying off the $300,000 of debts I had when I joined the company. My 24th check, received in March 1997 brought my earnings for the first 24 months to exactly $1 million.

"By the way, the compensation plan we had in those days was not nearly as lucrative as the plan we have now. Nor was the company as well managed. Nor were the economic times as favorable as times are now. Nor did we have the incredibly important nutrition and water ionization lines we have now."

I've been telling that story for 15 years and it will still be effective 15 years from now.

As a newcomer to Vollara, you have a clean slate when it comes to personal example. Even people who were in EcoQuest before...you have a fresh opportunity to plant your flag and say to the world,

"Okay, world, here I am, this is what I am going to do,

watch my smoke, and hold me accountable."

Set the best personal example you can. Everything matters. Here are some significant areas where you can prove yourself:
