Here is a testimonial --

I am so happy to see the Essential Fatty Acid as our POW! Absolutely, a HERO

of mine! Who ever knew what a difference it would make in my life? I didn't.

From gimping along on a cane for 8 long years in an equilibrium imbalanced world to walking free of assistance and looking up at the sky! How wonderful to be alive and feel whole again!

By the way, Mark Mundy's son, who has been taking Essential Fatty Acid too...ended this school year on the Straight A's Honor Role! This from a boy who was failing his first 6 weeks, had attention issues, and couldn't focus to do homework or pay attention in class! We're so proud of his success and humbled

by it too. What a gift to share something that helps so much!

So I am thrilled to see this week's product of the week! Every week's has it's own importance and we take many of them, but this one is extra special indeed.

Warm Regards,

Angie Elder

Educational

Essential Fatty Acids are in the news these days and a very hot research topic. More is known about them every week as additional studies come out. Some information hasn't changed since Julius Fast wrote The Omega-3 Breakthrough (The Body Press, 1987). One lesson from that book is that good fats compete with bad fats. Consequently, it is important to minimize the intake of trans fats and cholesterol (animal fat) while consuming enough good fats. As an example, most consumers are aware that good fats raise HDL or "good cholesterol." One of the functions of good cholesterol (high density lipoprotein - HDL) is to attach to bad cholesterol (low density lipoprotein - LDL) and escort it to the liver where it can be broken down and excreted.

Editorial note: In other words, Essential Fatty Acids has the ability to help repair some of the damage already done by the bad fats. This is extremely important in an age when so many Americans are struggling to get their cholesterol down and fight heart disease and obesity.

Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs)

Humans cannot synthesize Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs). They must be obtained through diet.

EFAs are long-chain polyunsaturated fats, notably linolenic, linoleic and oleic acids. There are two types: omega-3 and omega-6. A third, omega-9, is important but the body can manufacture a modest amount on its own, provided omega-3s and -6s are present.

The number following "omega" represents the position of the first double bond, counting from the terminal methyl group on the molecule.

EFAs support the cardiovascular, reproductive, immune, and nervous systems.

The human body needs EFAs to manufacture and repair cell membranes, enabling the cells to obtain optimum nutrition and expel waste products and harmful radicals. A primary function of EFAs is the production of prostaglandins, which regulate heart rate, blood pressure, blood clotting, fertility, conception, and play a role in immune function by regulating inflammation and encouraging the body to fight infection.

Essential Fatty Acids are needed for proper growth in children, particularly for neural development and maturation of sensory systems, with male children having higher needs than females. Fetuses and breast-fed infants also require an adequate supply of EFAs through the mother's dietary intake.

EFA deficiency is common in the United States, particularly omega-3 deficiency. The minimum healthy daily intake for both linolenic (omega-3) and linoleic (omega-6) acid via diet is 1.5 grams of each. One tablespoon of flaxseed oil can provide this amount; however, because high heat destroys linolenic acid, cooking in linolenic-rich oils or eating cooked linolenic-rich fish is not likely to provide a sufficient amount.

EFA deficiency and omega 6/3 imbalance is linked with serious health conditions, such as heart attacks, cancer, insulin resistance, asthma, lupus, schizophrenia, depression, postpartum depression, accelerated aging, stroke, obesity, diabetes, arthritis, ADHD, and Alzheimer's, among others.

Omega-3 (Linolenic Acid)

Alpha Linolenic Acid (ALA) is the principal omega-3 fatty acid, which a healthy human will convert into eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and later into docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). EPA and linoleic acid (omega-6) are converted into hormone-like compounds known as eicosanoids, which aid in many bodily functions including vital organ function and intracellular activity.

Omega-3s are used in the formation of cell walls, making them supple and flexible, and improving circulation and oxygen uptake with proper red blood cell flexibility and function.

Omega-3 deficiencies are linked to decreased memory and mental abilities, tingling sensation of the nerves, poor vision, increased tendency to form blood clots, diminished immune function, increased triglycerides and "bad" cholesterol (LDL) levels, impaired membrane function, hypertension, irregular heart beat, learning disorders, menopausal discomfort, itchiness on the front of the lower leg(s), and growth retardation in infants, children, and pregnant women.

Editorial note: I hope our readers are impressed with the vast number of functions where this product can be involved and helpful. We all understand the general value of Essentials For Life as a multivitamin, multi-mineral and multi-enzyme supplement. Essential Fatty Acids is "the other Essential." Don't skip taking it out of habit or out of dislike for the fishy taste. I (Bob Giddens) keep my EFA in the freezer. That seems to reduce the duration of the unwanted taste.

Omega-6 (Linoleic Acid)

Linoleic Acid is the primary omega-6 fatty acid. A healthy human with good nutrition will convert linoleic acid into gamma linolenic acid (GLA), which will later be synthesized, with EPA from the omega-3 group, into eicosanoids.

Some omega-6s improve diabetic neuropathy, rheumatoid arthritis, PMS, skin disorders (including psoriasis and eczema), and aid in cancer treatment.

Editorial note: Wow, wow, wow... is what I think as I read this stuff!

Although most Americans obtain an excess of linoleic acid, often it is not converted to GLA because of metabolic problems caused by diets rich in sugar, alcohol, or trans fats from processed foods, as well as smoking, pollution, stress, aging, viral infections, and other illnesses such as diabetes. It is best to eliminate these factors when possible, but some prefer to supplement with GLA-rich foods such as borage oil, black currant seed oil, or evening primrose oil. Or take the Infinity2 supplement!

Omega-9 (Oleic Acid).

Essential but technically not an "essential" because the human body can manufacture a limited amount, provided an ample supply of omega-3 and omega-6 acids are present.

Monounsaturated oleic acid lowers heart attack risk and arteriosclerosis, and aids in cancer prevention.

Technical and Historical Information

The essential fats were originally designated as Vitamin F, until it was realized that they are best classified with the fats. They were termed "essential" when researchers found that removing these fatty acids from the diet harmed the growth of young children and animals. Today commercial infant formulas contain these essential fats. In the body, essential fatty acids play a role in brain and nerve function, controlling inflammation, energy production, hormone production, and are one of the primary structural components of cell membranes.

Fatty acids play critical roles in human health and disease. In fact, they are so important that the brain cannot function without essential fatty acids. The membranes (protective walls) of all cells, not just brain and nerve cells, are composed of a double layer of fats. Essential fatty acids impact and control every cell of the body on a second-by-second basis. They increase oxidation and metabolic rate and are required for energy production. They regulate blood clotting, the inflammatory processes, hormone production, and play a critical role in the growth and development of children.

Breast milk contains fatty acids, particularly DHA and EPA, equivalent to amounts present in the mother’s diet (what mom eats or supplements with is critical). Raising children on formula or mother’s milk deficient in omega-3 fatty acids has been shown to contribute to impaired visual development, behavioral and learning disorders, and early allergies and asthma.

The fats you regularly eat strongly influence the ability of your cell membranes (especially brain and nerve cells) to function and can significantly impact your health. Medical conditions linked to the incorrect ratio of essential fatty acids includes heart disease, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, arthritis, diabetes, certain cancers, inflammatory diseases of the colon and respiratory system, ADD/ADHD, as well as depression and behavioral disorders.

In the body, essential fatty acids are modified to make the eicosanoids and the endogenous cannabinoids. Eicosanoids are hormone-like substances that regulate inflammation, clotting and other processes. Cannabinoids are a group of newly discovered biological chemicals that modulate the release of neurotransmitters and hormones, affect memory, vision, control pain receptors and play an important role in acute inflammatory reactions.

Because omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids compete for the same metabolic enzymes, the omega-6 to omega-3 ratio significantly influences the ratio and types of eicosanoids (prostaglandins, leukotrienes, thromboxanes, etc.) produced, and will alter the body’s metabolic function. Eicosanoids produced by omega-6, particularly arachidonic acid, are significantly more inflammatory than those of omega-3. This necessitates that omega-3 and omega-6 be consumed in a balanced proportion.

A growing body of research suggests that higher intakes of omega-3 fatty acids, especially EPA and DHA may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and help maintain cardiovascular health. Studies indicate that EPA and DHA both play a role in cardiovascular health through their specific individual effects in reducing LDL ("bad") cholesterol, increasing HDL ("good") cholesterol, reducing triglycerides, reducing blood pressure, reducing homocysteine levels and platelet stickiness. Most of these beneficial effects are achieved through the effects of the eicosanoids produced from EPA and DHA that inhibit platelet aggregation and reduce inflammation.

In addition to the extensive research on cardiovascular health and stroke prevention, researchers have found that the anti-inflammatory properties of omega-3 fatty acids may also be beneficial in inflammatory conditions such as Crohn’s disease, inflammatory bowel disease, arthritis and lupus. Another area of interesting research is the role of essential fatty acids in brain health. Studies have been conducted looking at the potential benefits of omega-3 fatty acids in depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (manic depression) and ADD/ADHD.

Researchers have found that essential fatty acids provide numerous health benefits including: a positive affect on HDL and LDL ratios, reduced platelet stickiness, improved circulation, reduced blood pressure, reduced inflammation and joint tenderness, stimulating the immune system, promoting calcium deposition in bone, and assisting in the balancing of hormones - especially as related to PMS and menopause. Although the exact mechanisms by which essential fatty acids may assist in these disorders is not fully understood, getting a balance of the essential fatty acids in the diet is a wise choice for supporting overall health and nutrition.
